just as not everyone buys expensive gear for the e-peen, not everyone hunting titles is either. i get titles because it's something i enjoy working on and it holds my interest in the game after 3 years. now that i have most of the titles i wanted on my ranger, i'm getting the ones i enjoyed most on my mesmer (coughnotcartographercough). and because you don't see many mesmers with Legendary Guardian either. i have overcome the oppression!

The way I see it is like so.
There are the people that get skins that they like.
There are people that want to show off what they have.
In the end it is all WORTHLESS as it is all pixels anyways........
So, do what makes you happy.
Remember a few golden rules on this subject:
(may apply to other subjects as well)
-It is only worth what someone else will pay.
-Those that collect for the love of collecting, always profit.
Those that collect for profit, seldom do.

The answer is easy, they do not have own criteria, and so, they go with the crowd.
For me, Gothic Defender+Shinobi sword+Kurzick 1K looks WAY better than obsidian edge+obsidian armor+whatever black shield anyone thinks that fit that.

Who gets to decide what looks good or bad? Whoever owns the character. Maybe in some people's eyes leet=good looking. I ended up with fow armor on my female ele, cause it was the only set that actually resembled armor in any way. The rest were all bikinis and skirts, tho I am still wearing high heels which is weird. Then I saved up for a fow mask, cause it looks badass. Will I ever get chaos gloves? No, cause I don't like em. But some people do, so who am I to complain.

ya, i hate a lot of expensive items.
i dont think the oby edge much, but i love my fiery gladius dyed black and my platinum blade. Dread masks are hella ugly imo, but i like the highlander woad.
i dont like monk FoW, but I do enjoy Ancient (most people don't though)
there are lots of people with lots of different tastes in this game.

The mentality of GW of vanity and price is a funny thing. Since the game has no REAL powerful equipment only looks this is the only way (other than titles) people can distinguish themselves above others in the looks department. Now games like EQ and Diablo 2 and WOW where looks AND POWER go hand n hand that's what makes the real difference in leetness as it not only takes the item, but, also the time invested to get those items. I know there is time invested in gaining leet vanity items in GW, but, nowadays gaining 100k is easier than childs play now. I make 100k a week just selling Zashien keys now rarely even stepping foot into PVE stuff anymore because that has just become repetitive boredom and at least PVP has different people (rangers, sins, warriors, dervishers) I stomp everyday. They basically look the same anyways in PVP as it's more about SKILL than LOOKS in PVP and that's why it's more fun and enjoyable now than PVE. I still buy leet items, but, mainly for my HEROES now as people are awed that my heroes have such leet equipment and theirs have junk and collectors gear. To me it doesn't really matter as I know looks don't make a skilled player at all and many are buying ebay gold and buying their stuff that don't have the time to make the 100k.
Just take everything with a grain of salt when it comes to looks and what is leet. It's worthless in a game like this where skill matters more than anything not how you LOOK.

I buy elite armor for hall of monuments and because I find they suit my style.
Of course, there is a big amount of elite armor that can go to hell :P

Who cares? It's like this in real life. It's like this in every other game. It will always be like this. If people want to be "l33t" looking to feel awesome, then so be it. I like to make my characters as good looking as I can, but that definitely doesn't include Chaos Gloves, blindfolds, or other "l33t" gear cause I just can't stand them. Thank goodness too cause I really don't want to have to farm to buy my armor.

I'm glad so many expensive things are ugly.
Saved me a lot of money
Then the hall of monuments came out and said you should buy really ugly things just to stick them in the hall, also they'll be customised so you're throwing your money away unless you give them to heroes and then be followed around by the uglyness

There's really nothing to understand...
People buying expensive items either buy it because they:
1) think it looks good - don't judge these people
2) like to show off to other people
a) because they are assholes
b) because they feel pleasure in /point and /laugh
i) harmless fun after earning something for there hard work
ii) hurting others after earning something hardearned (see 2a)
3) are sheep and like to follow the crowd
Feel free to mix and match the list above. It's an individual thing and you may never understand the person's reason for buying an expensive armour set and dying each part a different colour. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Edit... Why is it when I type in ten spaces for indentation, the 'a' and 'b' parts still appear in the beginning of the sentence?

Different people play the game for different reasons, unfortunately many think wealth is the most important part.
I play mainly aesthetically. I run around with a crafted Asuran Scepter (blue), do I care? Not really, but I bet their are a large percentage of people who would never be caught dead with a crafted and/or blue weapon. I have guildies who run around wearing Obsidian armor, wielding Tormented Weapons, Voltaics Spears, Obsidian Edges, R7 weapons, the lot. Does it make them feel bigger? Probably.
I even ran around in 1k Kurzick for months, even though I had dozens of Elite armor sets. Do the eles in Obsidian armor think they are better than me? Who cares, let them.
Even have one guildy (farms his ass off to buy those beloved uber-rares) that once even said "I want to get Chaos Gloves to be respected by the elite-GW community"... Oh the tears in my eyes when I read that.
Anyway basically, people play the game for different reasons. Some want to cool mega rich, some want to max titles, some want to have fun, and some play for the heck of it.

Its nowhere near being the most expensive and has been in the game for over 2 years, yet still gets more complements than any of the more expensive sets I own.
Goes to show you that buying up the most expensive stuff to impress others is just dumb. A lot of the people that know what it is and what its worth, are the same people that can easily afford it themselves and won't be all that impressed. And the people that don't know what it is/what its worth, are likely to be more impressed with something cheaper that looks good.

I found the same thing. When I ran around in 1k Kurzick (dyed pink/purple) I had several people complement/ask me what armor set it was. I once zoned into GToB AD1 and got a random whisper saying "Hi, I really like your armor. It really stands out from the crowd" and that was in GToB...

To the OP: I recently spent a bunch of reward points to get stuff like the Stygian Reaver and I already regret it. I liked my old Dual Gothic better somehow.

I never saw the point of buying stuff I don't like really. My warrior is running around happily in her 15k Kurzick (dye combo I sadly forgot >.<) with a blue Turai's Sword and a blue collectors Wooden Buckler (Black). I got a runic blade and plat blade sitting in my storage, but I don't think I'll ever use them...

Why do people buy expensive cars? Why do people eat caviar? Why do people buy expensive watches/clothes/jewellery?
Very simple, people want to discinct themselves from the masses with exclusive items. The Guild Wars community is nothing different in this behavour as the real life community.
